Landscape construction

Concrete patios and walkways, poured on a base that holds.

A concrete patio is only as good as what is under it. We dig out, compact the base, set solid forms and tie the steel before a truck shows up.

Concrete patios and walkways

What is included

Patios, walkways, steps and pads are built as part of complete landscape and hardscape projects, with the planting, drainage and lighting around them.

  • Demolition and haul-off of old concrete, tile or lawn
  • Excavation, grading and a compacted base
  • Forms, rebar and expansion and control joints
  • Stamped, smooth broom, scored or exposed finishes
  • Steps and landings with clean, square edges
  • Area drains and slope away from the house
  • Pool decks, as part of a larger landscape project
  • Driveways and front entries, as part of front-yard landscape projects

How we work

How it gets built

Rebar sits on supports in the middle of the slab, not on the dirt. We place control joints where the slab wants to crack, so it cracks there and not across your patio.

  1. Site visit

We walk the space with you, measure, check slope, access and drainage, and ask what you want the space to do.

  2. Written scope and price

Materials, finishes, layout, schedule and a clear price in writing. If your city needs a permit or an engineer, it is in the scope.

  3. Build

Our own crew. Excavation, base, forms, steel and drainage are checked before anything is covered.

  4. Walkthrough

We walk the finished work with you and close out the punch list before we call it done.

Timeline

How long it takes

A patio or walkway is usually on the short end of our 2 to 12 week range. Cure time comes before furniture, and stamped work is sealed after it cures. Your schedule is in the written scope.

Good to know

  • Pool decks and the hardscape around them are part of our landscape work when they are part of a larger landscape project. The pool itself, including the shell, plaster, coping and equipment, is built by a licensed C-53 pool contractor.
  • Driveways and front entries are built as part of front-yard landscape projects, not as stand-alone jobs.

Questions

Things people ask before they call.

Stamped or smooth concrete?

Stamped concrete gives you the look of stone or slate in one continuous surface. Smooth or broom finish costs less and suits walkways and side yards. Many of our patios use both: a stamped field with a smooth border band.

Will my concrete crack?

All concrete can crack. Good base prep, rebar, and control joints in the right places make cracks small and keep them where we planned them. That work happens before the pour, and it is where we spend our time.

Do you do driveways or pool decks?

Yes, when they are part of a larger landscape project, such as a new front yard or a backyard built around a pool. The pool itself, including the shell, plaster, coping and equipment, is built by a licensed C-53 pool contractor.

Do you take concrete-only jobs?

Our concrete work is part of landscape projects. If you only need a slab, text a photo to (805) 797-3346 and the office will tell you honestly whether we are the right crew or point you to one who is.

How long before I can walk or drive on it?

Foot traffic usually in a day or two, furniture after about a week, and heavier loads later. We give you the dates for your pour, since weather and mix change them.
